The Midwest would be the cheapest. Of course, coastal locations will be more costly, and as more people move away from the coasts, prices are growing quickly there as well. You can undoubtedly locate reasonably priced real estate up north, such as in the Dakotas, if you don’t mind the harsh winters. By American standards, the cost of living is likewise relatively inexpensive in Kansas, Missouri, and Indiana.

By California standards, $300 for a one bedroom is way dirt cheap! The cheapest apartments are generally illegal ones; the so-called mother-in-law units that are created over a garage or in an attic, or a place that would not pass the health inspectors. You don’t find those by looking in the newspaper classified ads, though.
There is also the question of cost of living in the area where you live. If the rents are low, but the salaries are lower even in proportion, that’s no bargain. If, on the other hand, salaries are high, then you can afford to pay more for rent. So, look at the rent as a portion of your income. My mother used to say you should pay no more for rent in a month than you earn (gross, not net; taxes will kill us all) in a week. If you can stick to that in today’s market, you are lucky.

In the northern new york, u can rent rooms for $50… in Ogdensburg, NY (Og-Dens-burg) … just to help with saying it… rooms are made for a single bed, and u get cable and a hot shower, and u share the house with a few other people, but most are friendly, and u have a door with a lock, so if u have issues with people and your stuff. There used to be some shacks along the side of the LIRR tracks in Long Island city. I’d say that they were probably free from the looks of them.
